Wavelengths is a passion project & documentary series I began shooting in 2024, and began to release on YouTube in early 2025.
Each entry in the series follows an emerging Australian band, and aims to showcase the personality and vibe of the musicians so you can tune into their wavelength!
After watching “How To With John Wilson”, I realised I wanted to make documentaries for a living, specifically documentaries about people with interesting stories to tell. As a music nerd, I dreamt about documenting the behind the scenes of an artist’s creative process and tour life.
I had a camera, but little experience documenting a person’s life, and even less social skills required to draw intimate answers out of interviews with my favourite bands, if I ever get there.
So I’ve spent the past year and a half taking my camera to local gigs, talking to emerging bands, and documenting their creative process and tour life!
And taking some behind the scenes photos along the way…
In my first entry on YouTube, I chat with Dublin Rose outside of Junk Bar about her songwriting process, and how her mum helped her realise she wanted to become a musician.
For the first time in the series, I joined a band during a recording session! With access to Hunting Ground Studios, I captured Council Grounds as they finished recording vocals for their upcoming EP.
I met Chamberlane at a gig in April of 2024, and decided to organise an interview at a local bowling alley to talk about their music.
We spent the game chatting about what makes this punk band tick, and I joined them again six months later after they’d found their new lead guitarist, where we broke down what being in a band has helped them overcome in their personal lives.
I heard about Jordan’s story of recording his first album in Chicago from Josiah - Chamberlane’s bass player who was also part of another band Calan Mai - and knew it would make for an interesting conversation.
I joined Calan Mai in Brisbane during their release tour for the album Jordan recorded in the USA over six years prior, to understand why his music went unreleased for so long.
coming soon…
I met Mt. Nadir the same day I interviewed Council Grounds at Hunting Ground Studios. I told them about wavelengths, and they invited me to their own recording session the next day, and for the next eight months, I documented their journey towards releasing their sophomore EP “Garden for One”.
At the end of 2025, Mt. Nadir toured to celebrate the release of their new music. I joined them on their trip to Melbourne, which really felt like I was beginning to live out my dream.
Shooting this documentary became more life affirming and rewarding than I imagined, and I made some incredible friends in the process. After documenting Mt. Nadir from April to November, this project is finally in post-production!
tomorrow’s forecast kept appearing on my instagram feed the more I worked on wavelengths. Once they released their sophomore EP “Speaking Terms” I reached out online about capturing the end of their tour.
As the band originated in the Gold Coast but now operates out of Brisbane, they had two homecoming shows. I joined them at both.
This documentary is currently in post-production.
I heard about a venue called Season Three at a Mt. Nadir gig, where I overheard a patron expressing how upset they were that such a legendary venue was closing. New to the scene, I had yet to attend a show there, but quickly became aware of the importance of it’s existence. I contacted the owner, Nick, and we scheduled an interview to discuss the history of the space.
I documented two of the venue’s final shows… until a few months later Nick tells me about a new space Season Three will be able to move into and repopen!
The project picked back up, and we chatted further about some of the underlying issues in the live venue industry, and why it’s so important the Season Three continues.
Chelsea Costar has been a recurring character in my wavelengths journey. She performed in Dublin Rose’s episode, we met at the first Mt. Nadir gig I attended, and I filmed her perform at Season Three. So, we finally began to shoot a project together, which is currently in the production stage!
